I can’t believe I’m still able to write a post like this in 2018, where everyone promotes self love, natural hair and positive vibes!

As you can tell by the title we’re about to touch on the topic of “good hair”. The term itself is just CRINGE WORTHY! I wasn’t going to address this but recent events gave me the push to do it anyway. The other day I ran into a fellow naturalista and of course we began conversing on the bases that we both had natural hair (as it usually happens for us all lol). The conversation was going pretty well until she made the half handed compliment…

“Oh you have that good pretty hair like mine.”

At the time my hair was really stretched and it appeared a little loose like her texture. I’m assuming she has type 3 hair just by the glance I got. I immediately gave her one of those half polite smiles and had no interest in continuing the conversation to be honest. I wondered if she’d still think the same thing if I had my hair in it’s shrunken afro state.

Another awkward moment transpired while in conversation with a few ‘relaxed haired’ ladies. If you’re natural, you know how it is being the only naturalista in a hair convo. They obviously expressed how they definitely couldn’t go natural, they commended me (the usual). What made me cringe was the fact that one of them felt so comfortable saying “oh yeah so and so has nice natural hair better than yours..” I kid you not, I was so shook at the casualty of it all. I could tell she wasn’t throwing shade. She just honestly believed that a certain texture was better and saw nothing wrong with it. Now usually I would take the time out to give my 2 cents on this whole ‘good hair bad hair’ situation, but I had no energy or time for it. However I’ll say it here and now…

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD AND BAD HAIR!!!!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD AND BAD HAIR!!!!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD AND BAD HAIR!!!!

Now that THAT’S out the way. I just wish everyone, especially us black/coloured people (men and women alike) would learn to love ourselves and see that we are beautiful and valuable the way God made us. Our parents, grandparents and great great great great grandparents have been conditioned to believe that their natural skin color and hair wasn’t/isn’t beautiful. This self conscious insecurity has now been passed down for generations and it’s taking a lot to undo the damage. ALL HAIR TYPES ARE BEAUTIFUL, or in this context GOOD. Apart from there being lots of different hair types and textures, the only thing that separates good and bad, as far as I’m concerned, is whether or not the hair is healthy.

If you take care of your hair it’s going to be soft, healthy, shiny and flourish. POINT BLANK. So don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your hair texture. Walk with your head held high so that everyone can see the beautiful crown you possess. If you’re relaxed or transitioning don’t let anyone discourage you from making the decision to return natural.

What are your thoughts on this whole good hair, bad hair situation? Does it irk you as much as it does to me? Share your thoughts below.
