Have you ever been in a situation where it felt weird to talk about Jesus to persons in your life? Did you ever get an urge to share the gospel with a stranger only to shy away because you were afraid of what they may think? Maybe God has placed something on your heart to share on social media, but you didn’t want to seem weird or be that Jesus freak. You may not want to admit to any of these, but I’ll be the first to say yes to all. I have definitely been in these situations. It got me wondering, do I really love God? Am I really willing to suffer for Christ? What if I was in a public place and some random person held us hostage, claiming that they would kill all those who professed that Jesus is Lord. Would I stand firm and take the bullet? Would you?
Think of the story of King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image (Daniel 3). He made an image of gold commanding all the peoples, nations and languages to bow down to it whenever they heard “the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music.” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were men of God, and refused to worship anything or anyone besides Him. When the king heard this, he called for them and questioned them. They stood their grounds and he ordered that they be thrown into the fiery furnace. They calmly accepted the punishment. However, the Lord redeemed them and they went unharmed. King Nebuchadnezzar was shocked and filled with amazement that not ONE part of their bodies or clothing was burnt. He then commanded that they be taken out of the furnace and decreed that: “Any people, nation or language that spoke anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.”(verse 29)
The Bible never ceases to amaze me when it comes to proving how faithful God is to those who serve and live for Him. Those men were willing to be burned ALIVE! Despite the fact that they mentioned how able their God was to save them, even if He didn’t, they were okay with that. They had an opportunity to back down and worship the golden image to save themselves; yet they did not take the easy way out.
Many of us Christians say that we are ready and willing to lay our lives on the line for Christ. Are we really?? Look at the Shadrachs, Meshachs, and Abednegos of today; the persecuted churches in India, China, Saudi Arabia, and the list goes on. They are standing ups for Jesus everyday! Their worship is on steroids in comparison to mine, if I’m allowed to be completely honest. The sad part about it is that I’m in no position to be fearful for my life like they are. So what’s stopping me? What’s stopping us? How is it so easy for them to go all out when worshiping Christ, but we tend to sometimes be so mediocre? How is it that they are willing to be brutally killed for our Lord and Savior, yet some of us can BARELY talk about Jesus to others without feeling weird? Why is it sometimes hard for us to do what is right and stand up for what we know to be Holy?
It all boils down to one question. Do we really love God? We can’t expect to win souls for Christ if our actions don’t match up to our words. Let us be bold and stand firm for Christ! Search your hearts and answer this one question. Are you REALLY willing to suffer for Christ?
